FOURTH KITEBOARDING TRICK: RAILY
How to perform a raily
Are you ready for the next step? Able to do the basic jumps and backrolls and want to take your freestyle to the the next level? In this blog I will explain you step by step how to perform a proper raily :) Next to the blog I made a short video edit to make the explanation visuable. The first step the hooked raily can be a trick it self. When you think you got it and you feel comfortable with the hooked raily you can start practicing unhooking. If you manage to unhook and perform a hooked raily you are ready to start practicing those unhooked raily’s :)
Herewith the video and the steps of the Raily, good luck!
Step 1 : the pop/hooked raily
The first step to get closer to that real unhooked raily is the pop. Keep your kite around 11 o’clock if you are cruising to the left or 13 o’clock if you are going to the right. Cruise on a regular speed and pre-pare for the take-off. Put your hand close to the middle of the bar and keep your hands/arms in front of your chest. Put your board flat for a split second and start edging. Edge as hard as you can and push your board upwind. When you start to feel the tension pop yourself out of the water. As soon as you leave the water kick your legs backwards and try to stretch your arms and get your body into one straight line.
Step 1.1 landing the hooked raily
After you managed to pop yourself out of the water and perform a hooked raily it is time for the landing. Let your legs drop down and move your front leg down wind. When you move your front leg downwind you position your board for a downwind landing. Land downwind and bend your knees during the landing. All safe and sound, catch up your speed and continue the ride.
Step 2: unhooking
Once you are able to do the hooked raily and you think you are ready for the unhooked raily it is time to learn how to unhook. If you already know how to unhook you can straight go to step 3.
Make sure your leash is attachted on sue-side mode before you start unhooking. Take the chicken-lock out and put it to the side so you have space to unhook. Now you are all set-up :). To unhook release the tension on your lines by putting your board flat. As soon as you put your board flat you move up and push the bar down with both hands. Push the chickenloop out and unhook, now you are riding unhooked. Never unhooked before the feeling of unhooked riding is probably totally new to you. To hook back in, again move your board downwind to release the tension on the lines and hook the chickenloop back in while holding the bar with both hands. If you can’t hook back in because the kite started pulling to much let go of the bar and grab the chicken-loop with both hands to pull it back in.
Step 3 : unhooked raily
Able to do a hooked raily and improved your unhook skills, then it’s time for the raily.
First put your kite in the right position somewhere around 10-11 o’clock if you want to perform your raily towards the left and 13-14 if you want to do it while cruising towards the right side. Unhook and prepare for the pop. While performing a unhooked trick it is important to start the pop/take-off immediately after you unhooked. Why? Because otherwise you lose the momentum and your arms are stretched to much to perform a proper pop. So unhook and start the pop. Finish the pop with a strong edge upwind, remind to keep your kite in one position during the pop. Kick your legs backwords and stretch your arms during the take-off. To get that perfect railey throw your head inbetween your sholders and get your body in that one straight line.
Step 3.1 : the landing and hooking in
After you managed to pop and go for the raily it is time to seal the deal. After you threw your legs up in the air they will naturally fall down. Let your legs fall down when your legs are underneath you again move your front foot downwind to get ready for the landing. Look where you are going and land down wind. Bend your knees during the landing to absorb the impact. Landing done cruise down wind a bit longer so you have time to hook back in. As soon as you are hooked back in again you can continue the ride ?
And the most important don’t forget to enjoy your time practicing :)
Hope to see you on the water landing those rally’s
Cheers Vera and team Oceanbirdz
